A Modest Proposal To Prepare Students For School Shootings

The United States has seen an unprecedented amount of school shootings in the past decade. This is a growing problem in the United States and it needs to be addressed. Schools are supposed to be a place where students can learn and grow without fear, but instead, it has grown to be a place where students jump and hide at the sound of a door closing or a balloon popping. This is why I have a new proposition for the growing problem of gun violence in schools. I propose that schools should purchase firearms for every single student and let them keep the weapons in their desk drawers.

Now you may be wondering, why would kids want to hold a firearm, let alone fire one at an active shooter? Well, data shows that more than 90% of American children play video games and 90% of popular video games portray violence like first-person shooter games (FPS) or survival games. Shooting games like CS Go, Call of Duty, and Rainbow Six Siege all simulate real-life combat scenarios so the best part about this proposal is that students that play FPS games can put all those hours of grinding into good use. What school administrators don’t realize is that with the right tools, students can eliminate the threat within a matter of seconds. Do school administrators think that hiding behind wooden desks and putting plastic chairs in front of the door will stop active shooters from coming into the classroom? How about instead of being sitting ducks, students can participate in a team death-match at school to increase their K/D ratio. The students that have good eyesight and aim could be given a sniper rifle to eliminate the shooters before they even enter the school and students that enjoy mid-range combat can be given M4s and Glocks. Of course, there will be incidents where kids will accidentally kill a fellow student, parent, or teacher, however, if you think about the alternative, it is a worthy sacrifice to stop violence in schools.

For the 10% of students that have never played any FPS games, I propose that we should hire military veterans to help train them to become effective shooters. We don’t want any untrained, undisciplined, or unmotivated shooters out on the battlefield or there may be lots of casualties from friendly fires. This proposal also tackles the unemployment problem with vets. About 1.5 million veterans are considered at-risk for homelessness in the United States and in 2020 the unemployment rate for vets rose to 7.3%. The people that serve and defend our country should be treated better and we should honor them by offering them employment as School Firearm Instructors, this way we can kill two birds with one stone. Another benefit to this proposal is that the U.S. Military can save millions of dollars in advertising funds because students would be more interested in joining the Army after fighting in several wars in their local high school. If additional training is required for the students, we can utilize the playground as a firing range so students can practice, increasing their skill as a marksman. If kids are running around during recess, bonus points if students can hit the kids in their legs, arms, or another non-lethal body part.

This proposal offers an opportunity to both students and teachers, no longer will they be subdued by active shooters. Just by implementing this proposal, active shooters will think twice before shooting up any more schools.
